Council insist everything looks rosy in Sheringham despite complaints over memorial garden

But North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) this week insisted the floral display meets 'expectations'.

The local authority inspected the landmark on the town's Boulevard following criticism from Sheringham Town Council who heard some of the weeds were as high as the roses.

A spokesperson for NNDC said: 'We have inspected the war memorial gardens and found it to be well within the expectations of the grounds maintenance specification.

'This year our contractor has encountered some delays in the planting of bedding flowers and we are taking steps to address this in future years.'

But they added: 'NNDC officers routinely check this area to ensure standards are being maintained and are confident that the ongoing schedule of works is addressing any matters of concern.'

Sheringham Town Council has agreed to take on the custodianship of the town's war memorial.

But members have refused to take over responsibilty for the gardens amid concerns local residents could end up paying twice for its upkeep through council tax levied by the town and district councils.

The landmark remembers the men and women of Sheringham and Beeston Regis who lost their lives in conflicts around the world.
