There are strong suggestions newly-elected President Donald Trump could visit Britain in the autumn.

East Anglia's American military bases are often on the itineraries of visiting US dignitaries.

Today, a spokesman said: 'While US Air Force units in the United Kingdom routinely provide logistical support to visiting government officials, we currently have no tasking to support a presidential visit to the UK.'

But with a visit some months away, both the President the military of which he is commander-in-chief have more pressing matters on their minds. Precise details may not be released in advance.

In 2012, first lady Michelle Obama greeted US service families at Mildenhall.

The base's fleet of flying tanker aircraft are set to be transferred to Germany in 2023, ending its association with the American air force.

There has been much speculation over when the new American leader would travel to Britain, with some reports claiming the trip had been moved from June to the end of the year in the hope of avoiding a wave of protests.

Some commentators believe an announcement from Buckingham Palace strongly points towards an October visit by Mr Trump.

The Palace said in a short statement: 'King Felipe VI, accompanied by Queen Letizia of Spain, has accepted an invitation from the Queen to pay a state visit to the United Kingdom from June 6 - 8, 2017. The King and Queen of Spain will stay at Buckingham Palace.'

Spain's monarch was due to make a state visit to the UK in March last year but this was postponed due to a political crisis in his own country.

Prime Minister Theresa May announced the US president was being given the honour of a state visit, during which he will be hosted by the Queen, when she became the first international leader to visit Mr Trump after his inauguration.

Some 1.8m people signed an online petition calling for Mr Trump not to make a state visit, as it would cause embarrassment to the Queen.

But the Government insisted last month that the visit would still go ahead. Downing Street says a date for Mr Trump's planned visit would be announced 'in due course'.
