North Norfolk District Council has taken on extra temporary staff to cope with a surge of calls as council tax bills land on people's doormats.

A spokesman said the NNDC phone network was being used 'to capacity', but callers were still experiencing an average wait of four minutes, while others were waiting 'much longer' at peak times.

He said: 'We can only apologise for this and ask callers to be patient, and if their call can wait, ask them to leave it for a couple of days.'

NNDC offers an automated council tax payment line, 0300 123 1109 and general information on council tax issues can be found on the NNDC website www.northnorfolk.org
