A lottery bid for £1.4m will be made to rejuvenate a busy conservation area in the heart of King's Lynn.
West Norfolk councillors unanimously agreed in a council meeting to apply for Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) for improvements to be made in Railway Road, Norfolk Street and Blackfriars Road.
The Townscape Heritage programme, first launched three years ago, made significant improvements in the Saturday Market Place and St James Street with the help of lottery funding.
The area was made more pedestrian-friendly with improved pavements and parking.
Now the council is hoping empty land and derelict buildings surrounding the one-way system close to the town centre will be given a new lease of life if the funding application is successful.
Speaking in the council meeting in King's Lynn Town Hall on Thursday, November 16, council leader Brian Long said: 'We have only got to look outside this building and look at the former Wenns pub and all the work happening in St James Street, this proposal is to extend the area - to bid for money to improve areas that are letting the town down. 'The Townscape Heritage programme has worked very well for this town and we should support a second phase bid.'
Councillors have agreed that the remaining £600,000 of the £2m scheme will be contributed by the borough over five years from 2019.
