Lifeboat men and women stationed across Norfolk and Waveney, who regularly risk their lives to save others, both in and offshore, were honoured for their work at an awards ceremony last night.
Crews from Caister, Mundesley, Wells, Hemsby, Sea Palling, Happisburgh, Hunstanton, Sheringham, Cromer, Great Yarmouth & Gorleston and Lowestoft received the Special Recognition Award in a glittering ceremony at Sprowston Manor, near Norwich.
In presenting them with the award Nigel Pickover, Eastern Daily Press editor-in-chief said: 'The region is a proud coastal community, with its links to the sea and other waterways playing a huge role in its economy and cultural heritage.
'While these natural assets bring great opportunities, the North Sea in particular presents a challenge – even to the most experienced seafarers – and the wrong weather conditions can prove deadly.
'This county, therefore, owes a huge debt of gratitude to the volunteer lifeboat men stationed across Norfolk and Waveney who routinely risk their own lives to save that of others, who head out knowing there is a real possibility that they might never see their family or friends again.'
The room of more than 250 people got to their feet as the volunteers from the lifeboat stations across the county made their way to stage and received a trophy and a donation to the running of their stations.
