Volunteers have been praised for sprucing up Southwold seafront with a splash of paint.

A small team of residents began painting the town's Victorian railings in September last year and this week, after a brief winter break, were due to complete the job.

Simon Tobin, who help set up the community project, said: 'Fifteen people have worked tirelessly on this job. They have spent three days a week painting and I just want to thank them all so much.

'They've done a fantastic job and the whole community is proud.'

The group now has just 34 sections out of a total 448 left to paint.

Before the ambitious project got underway, it had been 16 years since the metalwork was painted and the railings were in dire need of some attention before the summer tourism season arrived. Now each railing has been given three coats of white paint to keep them looking smart for the foreseeable future.

And those involved in the Southwold railings community project are already looking for their next assignment.

'We're about to go to the Southwold Town Council and Reydon Parish Council to arrange for other projects we could get involved in,' added Mr Tobin.

'Hopefully, with the success of this one, more and more people will want to join in and volunteer to help out. It will just grow from here.'

The railings are one of the centrepieces of Southwold's iconic seafront. Future projects could tackle similarly 'high profile' locations along the coast.
