Wanted: Twelve volunteers to operate a Chinese dancing dragon; one sporting hero; a marching band and the same community spirit that was witnessed on the day the Olympic torch was carried through Fakenham.

That is what organisers of this month's annual Fakenham Fair are looking for.

The fair, which is essentially the town's carnival, is to be held on August 25 at Millennium Park.

The parade will have an Olympics theme and Fakenham's Diego Rahman, who carried the Olympic torch through Fakenham, will lead it along with a local sports hero, to be selected.

Sports groups in Fakenham are being asked to nominate people. Some nominations have been received but there is still time to get nominations in.

The parade will also feature a Chinese dancing dragon.

Organisers of the Fakenham Fair, Kick Start Fakenham, need 12 volunteers to form the body of the dragon,

And, due to Fakenham Town Band and the Fakenham air cadets band having other commitments on the day, a marching band is needed for the parade.

Fakenham was renowned for the popularity of its carnivals back in the 1980s.

The Fakenham Fair was revived three years ago and, last year saw the first carnival parade through the town for several years.

Kick Start Fakenham chairman Mark Baldwin said: 'We've been working on this all year and it is all coming together well.

'Last year's event was brilliant and we had about 1,000 people on Millennium Park within an hour of it opening. 'We've had a lot of feedback from last year, which we've taken on board. One thing in particular, is we've made sure we have toilets and baby-changing facilities on Millennium Park.

'Last year people would walk away to use the toilets on Queen's Road and then not come back. This should be a good way of keeping people there.'

There will be stalls and trade stands on Millennium Park from 11am until 6pm.

In Market Place from 9.30am there will be a farmers' market and in Fakenham Parish Church there will be a craft fair.

At 1pm the carnival procession will start from Highfield Road car park and make its way through the town centre before finishing at the Millennium Park in time for the afternoon entertainment.

From 2pm there will be live music, sports demonstrations, dancing, children's races, a children's activity tent and music provided by North Norfolk Radio.

Refreshments will be available all day and cars can be parked at Fakenham Junior School, next to the park.

To book a stand or place in the procession, nominate a sporting hero, be a part of the Chinese dancing dragon or provide a marching band, contact Lisa Mallett on 01328 855172 or go into Sweets 'N' Things, Oak Street, Fakenham.
