The last leg of a 'challenging project' to fix the Sheringham sinkhole is under way.

As reported, a community street party is planned on September 1, after the reopening of the High Street.

The saga started when a cavernous sinkhole opened up on May 25, which has led to more than three months of disruption and the road being closed to vehicles.

Works on repairing damage to sewers and pipes under the High Street are due to finish by the end of August.

And the town's deputy mayor Liz Withington said "We have started the last leg of this challenging project.

"Highways has started planning the surface so we will not end up with a patchwork quilt.

"The final push takes us to the opening of the road and the community street party from 3pm to 5pm with everybody invited to join us to acknowledge how the community has survived the sinkhole. There will be music and a best dressed table competition with a prize donated by Anglian Water.

"With the road open we will also be looking forward to the 1940s weekend with the North Norfolk Railway and the Carnival Association where we will have around 40,000 people visit and take part."
