The Mariners Compass pub in Middleton Road in Gorleston will see its opening times slashed by two hours at night after complaints about noise and anti-social behaviour from nearby homeowners.

After a meeting of Great Yarmouth Borough Council's licensing subcommittee, the pub will have its hours of opening restricted from its current closing time of 2.30am to 12.30am Monday to Saturday.

The licensee Joanne Searby said after the meeting the pub would appeal the committee's decision to the magistrates' court.

The committee chairman, Brian Walker, said councillors had given the decision a lot of thought.

He added: 'This decision in no way reflects on the landlady or the pub, just the events that happen after people have left the premises.'

At an emotive meeting at the town hall on Monday, representatives from the pub and a residents' group gave their sides of the story.

Gill Tweed, who has lived at her home in Middleton Road for 23 years, said noise from revellers leaving the premises had given her and her neighbours sleepless nights.

She added: 'You can't relax during the evenings or holidays.'

Gavin Rushmere helped set up the Suffield and Middleton Road Residents Group after a night when three cars in the street were damaged, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

He added: 'Residents realise that the licensee needs to make the pub profitable but residents have a human right to enjoy their homes without noise.'

Gemma Searby, who represented her mother Joanne Searby, the licensee, said the pub had made changes after concerns were raised.

She added: 'We're only human and know errors can occur and hope to build back a good working relationship with residents.

'If residents come to us with concerns without feeling awkward we would be able to resolve them.'

She said the pub had installed double glazing to reduce noise and also made sure a side door and windows were closed by 8pm and also removed a 'noisy' punch bag machine in the garden which a neighbour complained about.

If the pub had to reduce hours it may lead to a member of staff losing their job.
