LABOUR snatched a Tory stronghold seat in a Great Yarmouth by-election last night.

Marlene Fairhead took the seat with 424 votes with Conservative candidate Carl Smith polling 401 votes. There was a 24.21pc turnout for the St Andrew's ward vacancy, caused following the death of Tory councillor Gerry Cook.

Both candidates live in Gorleston.

It's the second Conservative seat taken by the local Labour group this year. In the May 6 elections, Barbara Wright took the other St Andrew's ward seat from sitting councillor Brian Watts.
