Shoppers in a Norwich store overpowered a female robber who threatened staff with a knife.

Staff and late night shoppers were shocked when a woman entered the Spar store, in St Augustine's Gate, brandishing a knife at about 8.40pm on Tuesday. The 27-year-old threatened staff and demanded that they hand over cash.

She was overpowered by two members of the public, who managed to detain her at the shop until the police arrived.

Police arrested her at the scene and she is now being held at Bethel Street Police Station in Norwich.

A 43-year-old man, who was arrested near Magdalen Street at about 12.20am today, is also being held in connection with the incident.

Det Sgt Nigel Richards said: “We have interviewed a number of eye witnesses already but we know that there were other people in the shop at the time of the robbery who have not spoken to us.”
