Improvement works on a landmark 15th century building in King's Lynn has been given a boost thanks to a helping hand from Friends of the Walks.
The group have donated £3,500 to the South Gate interpretation renewal project, which will go towards works to modernise and improve the way information about the building is presented.
West Norfolk council worked in partnership with Norfolk Museum Service to secure £89,500 of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project.
The work will include installing new interior lighting, and replacing the information panels inside and outside the building, which date from the 1980s, to include more recent research done into the history of the building.
Some of the panels will show the view from each window as it would have been in centuries past, providing a unique view into how Lynn has changed around the South Gate.
Interactive elements like a scale model, and an activity table where visitors can make brass rubbings will be added.
Displays of replica furniture, clothes and objects will bring the history of the South Gate to life, younger visitors can even try on replica helmets for a taste of life as a defender of this ancient gateway.
Councillor Elizabeth Nockolds, deputy council leader and cabinet member for culture, heritage and health, said: 'This is a very generous donation from the Friends of The Walks, a group of people who already give up a considerable amount of time to ensure that our historic monuments are open to the public as often as possible, and the borough council is incredibly grateful.
'The money will go towards this exciting project to revitalise interest in the South Gate; a building of great significance throughout the long history of our town.
'We've planned lots of events and activities for when the work is finished in the spring to show off the new and improved South Gate – keep an eye out for the details.'
The Friends of The Walks are a group of volunteers that help to look after King's Lynn's renowned 42-acre 18th century park.
