West Norfolk council, which leases the building, says it has received an approach from a charity created by an anonymous local investor.

Talks are underway in collaboration with the National Trust and the Arts Council to secure the long-term future of the historic venue.

Chairman of the drama group King’s Lynn Players, who have performed at the guildhall for nearly 70 years, said he welcomed the plans but added: “The King’s Lynn Players have consistently lobbied the council for the theatre to continue in the complex and we remain committed to pursue this.

“We hope to have the opportunity to demonstrate that there is room to incorporate a theatre into future plans.

“We remain hopeful and positive and look forward to further dialogue with the council in the coming months.”
