Overheating chemicals sparked a fire alert at a major industrial site in West Norfolk.

Emergency secrives were sent to the Palm Paper mill off Poplar Avenue at 2.23am this morning.

Four appliances, two from King's Lynn and two from Terrington, attended the fire in the Saddlebow Industrial Estate.

A spokesman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: 'The fire is not near any residential properties. Crews had to use jets as well as breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control.'

Palm Paper declined to comment. The giant plant, on the banks of the Great Ouse, appeared to be operating as normal.

Later it emerged that a small fire on the site had been caused by stored chemicals overheating and crews had remained on site as a precaution.

The fire is the latest of a series of incidents at the factory, which turns recycled paper into newsprint.

In October 2016, 80 firefighters were called to a blaze which broke out in two large paper bales, damaging machinery and halting production.

The following year, Palm's annual report revealed the fire had cost it £11m.
