A new attraction always brings out the crowds in King's Lynn and a medieval market in the town centre went down a treat, despite the wet weather.

Honey meads, spiced wines and a hog roast were on the menu with Christmas shoppers able to browse rows of stalls selling handcrafted items in the Tuesday Market Place.

Other visitors could enjoy a lavish banquet in the Town Hall or attend a concert by the Mediaeval Baebes at St Nicholas Chapel.

Maurice Bacon, organiser of the event, said: 'This is the first one we've done here. The weather was not good, but that's the problem hosting outdoor events.

'Overall, it's gone fairly well, and we hope to be back next year. We want to make it into something that becomes a real attraction.'

Stallholder Robin Holmes, who runs Trade Winds, which specialises in silver jewellery and fair-trade handicrafts, said it was busy, despite the weather.

He said: 'On Saturday, lots of people turned up and there was a nice atmosphere.'

Many of the stallholders wore traditional costume, and jester, 'Devil Stick Peat', entertained the crowds.

He said: 'I've loved my time here. It's a great town and we've had great reaction from the public. When you dress like I do, you can get stick from the youngsters, but the kids here have been really respectful.'

As an added attraction, the Mary Rose pop-up museum was part of the market, which ran from Friday, December 11 to Sunday, December 13.

The Mary Rose sank in 1545 and remained at the bottom of the sea until it was raised in 1982.

The ship, along with over 19,000 artefacts recovered with it, has become part of an award-winning museum in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The museum is closed until next summer, and the pop-up museum, which features real and replica artefacts, is touring the UK, visiting festivals and historic events.

The museum's Wendy Pyatt said: 'We've felt really welcomed by the people of King's Lynn, and they have been excited to have us here.'
