There is a little bit of Norfolk flourishing in London, thanks to songbird Katie Meula. Angi Kennedy finds out more.

It's her guilty secret. But as secrets go, Katie Melua's admission is a fragrant, indeed rather charming one.

As she prepares to return to the area next month for a one-off concert in Thetford Forest, the petite Georgian songstress reveals she has a little piece of Norfolk right on her doorstep . . . or growing in her back garden to be more precise.

'My tour manager used to live in Norfolk, you see, before he moved to America,' she explains. 'In his garden he had a peach-coloured rose bush that I loved when I visited him there.

'So when he about to move I went up to Norfolk, dug up the rose and brought it back to my house. It was the middle of July and I remember driving all the way up to Norfolk then having to start digging. It was a big rose too, so I spent about an hour digging it up!

'It's still alive though and in my back garden looking lovely,' she giggles.

Katie will restrict her return to the county to the forest stage rather than indulging in any forays into gardening this time though, and is looking forward to the gig on Saturday July 10.

'I have done one of these forest gigs before and really enjoyed it,' says 25-year-old Katie. 'It is such a lovely place to come to.

'We did some summer concerts in England two years ago though and it rained down constantly. There were storms and everything - it was really dramatic - but I remember feeling so amazed that people would still come out in that weather to see me. I'm just hoping that the weather will be kinder at Thetford.'
