Four months ago Jordan Greenwood's life changed when the scooter he was driving was involved in a collision with a car.
The 23-year-old was one day away from starting a new life in Canada but instead faced hours of surgery to amputate his right leg below the knee and to help fix a broken femur.
Despite some set backs Mr Greenwood, who is from Thetford and lives in Kilverstone, has been walking for a month on his prosthetic leg.
Although there are days when he gets frustrated, Mr Greenwood is determined not to let it stop him from reaching his goals.
He aims to get his driving licence this year, wants to organise a charity event and is planning how he can get his Canadian dream back on track.
'I am not doing too badly,' he said. 'I do get annoyed at things because I cannot just go out; I have to think 'can I get there on my own?'. It just goes to show how things can change so quickly.'
He added: 'The furthest I have walked was from Zaks American Diner to the Whetherspoons in town and that was quite an achievement.'
Mr Greenwood was all set to live in Ontario where he had a job with a haulage firm waiting for him. His girlfriend Clarisse Arnold was due to join him a few months later.
But on May 18 he was involved in the crash outside Thetford Garden Centre.
After leaving the amputee rehabilitation service at Norwich's Colman Hospital at the end of July, Mr Greenwood spent three weeks unable to use his prosthetic after picking up an infection. But he has not looked back since.
He and Miss Arnold are now looking into organising a midnight fundraising walk in Thetford to raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance after he was flown to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Mr Greenwood said he wants to 'give something back'.
Currently the couple are waiting for a suitable house to become available and Mr Greenwood is hoping to get a new leg socket in November.
They hope to be able to enjoy a four week holiday to Canada in December after what Miss Arnold has called a 'hectic' time.
'It is about having some time out and going and doing something we can enjoy,' she said. 'Jordan is doing amazing. But that's Jordan. He is not the kind of person to just lie around.'
