A school has raised more than £4,000 for those living with cancer in memory of an “exceptional” maths teacher who touched the lives of countless pupils.

Jenny Hammerton, of Hobart High School in Loddon, died in October last year following a battle with breast cancer.

The 34-year-old, who joined the school in 2007, was known for her dry sense of humour and passion for teaching as well as her involvement in extra curricular activities such as Canoe Club and the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

Head of mathematics Louise Rudd said: “Jenny would bring maths alive and relate it to the outside world and activities she was interested in.

“She was a exceptional lady who showed who showed amazing bravery in the battle she fought.”

To honour the inspirational teacher around 450 pupils donned fancy dress and took part in the first annual ‘Jogging 4 Jenny’ event - a 5km course around the school ground - on Thursday, July 12.

The event, organised by fellow teacher Helen Horn, was designed to raise money and awareness for Norfolk cancer charity The Big C - which helped Mrs Hammerton during her time of need.

Mrs Rudd said: “We knew it was going to be good but it was just phenomenal.

“We have focused on Jenny due to her direct links to the school but the day also dealt with the wider affect of cancer.

“Cancer affects everybody, so even pupils who didn’t know Jenny, sadly statistics show the chances are members of their family have been affected by cancer.”

Every single pupil completed the course and received a medal engraved with the ‘Jogging 4 Jenny’ slogan.

At the time of writing more than £4,000 has been raised for the campaign but donations continue to flood in.

It is not just current staff and pupils who have been raising money in memory of the teacher.

When news of Mrs Hammerton’s death reached former pupils through social media they came together and donated to The Big C charity in her memory.

Likewise members of the surrounding community have also pledged their support through donations to the event’s JustGiving page.

Mrs Rudd added: “It’s a testament to her character and reputation; she reached the hearts and minds of a lot of people.”
