A survey, carried out by motorbike insurance specialists Carole Nash, found that 41 per cent of tattooed people in Norwich boasted more than six designs each, making it the second most tattooed city in the country.

The most popular designs were letters, flowers and animals.

Sam Taylor, manager of tattoo studio Indigo on Upper Goat Lane, said: 'We see a lot of people coming in and out, people of all ages, getting all sorts of tattoos.'

He said that the most popular designs include silhouettes of birds and trees as well as dream catchers.

Sam, who is 22, has tattoos on 60 per cent of his body and got his first tattoo aged 18, has no plans to stop adding to his body art.

He said: 'I have tattoos literally everywhere, but I still have a bit of space so I am planning more, I won't stop.'

He added: 'It's like an addiction, once you get one it leads to more.

'But it is no different to buying a painting for your house, if you like the design you can have it there for life.'

A Norwich mother-of-two who has over one hundred tattoos all over her body was not surprised by the findings of the study.

Ruth Knapp of Earlham Road said: 'I have lots of friends who are heavily tattooed.

'Whenever I go to other places I do not see as many people with tattoos.'

The artist, who is also a blogger is so proud of her Norfolk heritage that one of her tattoos is of Happisburgh Lighthouse.

She said: 'It's really iconic for Norfolk, my dad lived in Happisburgh so I partly grew up there.'

The 38-year-old who is behind lifestyle blog 'Life in a Fine City' said that she would love to get a Norwich tattoo: 'That will definitely be next, if I can find a space.'
