A man in his 20s was killed when a Ford van crashed into the rear of a lorry in a lay-by on the A47 south of Norwich last night.

It happened shortly after 7.10pm when a white Ford Escort van collided with a stationary HGV in the lay-by near Harford Bridge.

The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene.

The westbound section of the A47 between Trowse Newton and the A140 Ipswich Road junction was closed, while emergency teams worked at the scene. The road re-opened at 1.25am.

Fire crews from Carrow, Earlham, Sprowston and Wymondham were called. A fire spokesperson said the crews used hydraulic rescue equipment to release one person from a vehicle and provided scene safety.

Last night a police spokesperson confirmed the accident was fatal.

And on Tuesday morning police said they were keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or had information about the driving manner of the van before the crash.

•Witnesses should contact PC Bob Connor at Wymondham Roads Policing on 101.
