An investigation found that mid-Norfolk MP George Freeman was among a number of politicians to have faced significant hostility on social media.
Researchers at the University of Central Lancashire found the Conservative MP ranked fourth in a list of UK politicians who have faced abuse on Twitter between December 22 and May 9.
Mr Freeman claimed he was misquoted during an interview about disabilities and it led to abuse online. He said the incident is what caused him to be ranked highly on the list.
'It went on for about three days I was called terrible things and all of my ranking comes from that one incident, but that also tells you a lot about the power of social media,' he said.
The MP acknowledged some situations can be difficult but he's keen to use social media to engage with voters and on Monday he engaged with Dereham residents via Facebook, giving people the chance to question him on his party's policies.
