An inquest has opened into the death of one of the founders of the Norfolk and Norwich Novi Sad Association during a trip to Serbia.

Eighty-four-year-old Diana Beckley, a retired teacher from Star Lane, Rockland St Mary, was on holiday with her husband Peter and other members of the organisation when she tripped over in an art gallery in the Serbian city of Sombor and suffered serious head injuries. She died on September 22.

At today's inquest opening, the date for the full inquest into Mrs Beckley's death was set for January 17.

Mrs Beckley and her husband were founding members of Norfolk and Norwich Novi Sad Association set up in 1985 to support Norwich's connection with its twin city. The couple were both made an MBE for their services to twinning as well as honorary citizens of Novi Sad. A service in memory of Mrs Beckley was held in Novi Sad City Hall, attended by the city's mayor.
