Progress has been made towards securing the future of a South Norfolk football club threatened with closure due to mounting debts.

Six weeks ago, Wymondham Town FC, who play at Kings Head Meadow, were facing debts of £3,000, which prompted a public meeting to discuss setting up a new club structure to prevent a repeat of the problems, which left the club within weeks or months of having to shut down.

Committee member Andy Gardiner said in the space of six weeks, the debt had been reduced by nearly £1,000 - which was 'a huge improvement,' aided by the support from the Wymondham community, which had offered money and organised fund-raising events to help the club.

However, he warned there was still work to be done to ensure the club was on a more stable financial footing.

'I think the atmosphere around Wymondham is now very supportive around the club. I think there is a buzz around the club because so many turned up for that meeting.

'An awful lot of people have come forward in a fund-raising capacity and I think the future is looking very bright, but obviously we are far from where we want to be,' Mr Gardiner added.

Figures showed that when the public meeting was called, there was just £85 in the bank - but now there is £1,925.20 and the club has generated £2,401.80 between March 1 and March 14.

The result is that the debt is down from £2,700 to £1,938.

The club's accounts had not been completed properly during the six-month period between former treasurer Tony Sheldrake leaving the role due to ill health in December 2012 and the new treasurer, Emma Chambers, taking over in May.

At the public meeting, Mr Gardiner revealed figures collected by the treasurer, which showed that during the last six years the club had a turnover of £339,267, yet made a net loss in all but one year. He said a number of costs could have been reduced, such as pipe cleaning at the bar and free drinks on matchdays.

A new six strong committee to oversee the running of the club is set to be ratified at an extraordinary general meeting on March 31.
