A woman accused of causing a crash in which a 78-year-old man died told police she could not remember doing anything wrong before the collision.

Melanie Last, 50, is accused of causing the death by careless driving of William Plewman in a three-car crash on the A146, near Thurton.

Norwich Crown Court heard that Last, of Burlingham Drive, Carlton Colville, was driving a black BMW towards Norwich, when she is alleged to have had a 'momentary lapse' and drifted onto the wrong side of the road, causing a collision which left her and two other drivers with serious injuries.

Mazda pick-up driver Mr Plewman, who lived in Stratford Upon Avon, received serious internal injuries, from which he later died.

Last has denied causing the death by careless driving of Mr Plewman on June 29, 2015.

In police interviews read to the jury, Last said she had no idea why she might have drifted onto the wrong side of the road.

She told police: 'I have no idea. I could not even answer that question, I'm sorry. To my knowledge I was driving to the best of my ability.'

She said she had not been in any hurry or trying to overtake and had been driving to Snetterton, to meet her husband.

She said: 'I don't recall doing anything wrong.'

Asked if there was any reason she could give for what happened, such as her having a blackout or any underlying medical issues, she replied: 'No, not at all.'

She said that she had answered all the questions about the crash as best she could.

The court heard that Last, who works as a buyer, had no endorsements on her driving licence or any convictions and had been driving for more than 30 years and had passed an advanced driving course.

She told police: 'I feel I am safe on the road.'

The jury also heard details of the post mortem examination carried out on Mr Plewman which showed his injuries included rib fractures on his left side and he had suffered internal bleeding in his chest cavity.

The trial continues.
