Hundreds of motorcyclists will be revving their engines down the A47 to show their commitment in the fight against cancer.

The bike ride will be in memory of Angela Amies, from Norwich, who died in December last year aged 72 after a 25-year battle with cancer.

She passed away at the Weybourne Unit in Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital just before Christmas. Family friend Susan Wilson, 48, from King's Lynn, decided to put together a motorbike charity ride to raise money for the newly-expanded unit.

Ms Wilson said the family of Mrs Amies supports the event, adding: 'Everyone is so distraught, like it happened yesterday.

'I met her for the first time in hospital, she was such a terrific woman. She used to go and support other people at the unit even when she was suffering herself.

'When she was younger she was a fighter, she was even on a scooter herself.'

Ms Wilson organised a similar bike ride two years ago which raised £1,100. This year, she is hoping to beat that target.

'Whenever we do anything like this it's very scary and exciting at the same time. You're quite concerned too little people will turn up but then you're excited and feel the adrenaline when you see the bikers, it's amazing.' She added.

Bikers are to assemble on Sunday, June 11, at Sainsbury's in Hardwick, King's Lynn, for a 10.30am start. The ride will take them down the A47 to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with food and refreshments available at the finish line.

Ms Wilson said patients at the Weybourne unit have been able to enjoy a cup of tea thanks to the donations of mugs and crockery made by the Sainsbury's stores in Hardwick, Pound Lane and Longwater.

She is hoping the money raised from the bike ride will pay for specialist heat pads and equipment for the unit as well as iPads for patients who feel lonely.

She said she was humbled by the response the charity event has received online, adding: 'You tend to get very emotional.'

Entry fee for the bike ride is £5 per person and anyone wishing to join can turn up on the day. For more information, contact Sue Wilson on the event Facebook page.
