Santa arrived in time travelling style for the Christmas lights switch-on in Thetford last night, appearing before thousands of people in his very own Tardis.

The Doctor Who style transport, complete with smoke, music and sound effects, was the highlight of the annual switch-on, which saw a huge crowd braving the bitterly cold weather as the town began its Christmas celebrations in style.

Last night's event featured a number of activities to keep people entertained with the Thetford Singers performing a selection of carols, while the bells also rang out in festive style at St Peter's Church.

The ceremony, held in front of King's House on King Street, also featured carousel rides, bungee jumping, a climbing wall, as well as food and community stalls with shops also remaining open.

The lights were switched on by Barney Bear, with the help of competition winners Jacob Sandoual, aged eight, from Salisbury Way, and nine-year-old Harriet Street, from Fishers Way.

Following his arrival Father Christmas opted for a more traditional sleigh to take a trip around the market place and head for his grotto.

The Ancient House and Dad's Army museums were also open for festive fun and an art and craft fair was set up in the Guildhall.

Susan Glossup, town manager, said despite the cold weather it had been a great evening, and a great effort had been made to clear any icy pavements and roads beforehand.

'It was absolutely fantastic,' she said. 'The town was crowded and there is so much going on.'
