The home club in Sunday's West Norfolk football match which had to be abandoned after a brawl announced last night (Monday) it was to fold with immediate affect.

Clenchwarton Victory took to the social media 'airwaves' to announce the shock decision, even though a league probe into the incident is yet to reach a verdict.

'Just to confirm it was our decision to fold', the club announced on Twitter. It emphasised there was no involvement from the Kings Lynn Sunday League in which they played.

'We are waiting for the conclusion of their meeting on Thursday,' the club said.

'Everyone is hugely disappointed at the outcome after a promising start from such a young team.'

Sunday's match was abandoned after police were called around 10.30am to reports of a disturbance between the Clenchwarton side and Tilney Green Lions in a division two fixture.

A Norfolk Police spokesman said: 'We were called to a disturbance on a football pitch and upon our arrival no one wished to make any allegations.

'Inquiries are still ongoing and we have the names of those present so if anyone does make a formal complaint we will be able to take it from there.'

Through social media the Clenchwarton side revealed the match had been called off after half an hour's play 'after a brawl broke out. Ref handled the situation excellently.'

The club thanked the landlord of the Victory pub for having sponsored their kit and anyone else who was involved with the club.'

The club also thanked their manager, Steve Thurston and his assistant Karl Tordoff and praised the team 'of mostly 16 year olds who like to get the ball down and play the game the way it should be.'

The club said the decision 'proved extremely difficult but the management team decided that the safety of our players had to be put first.'

Supporter Billy Pawsey tweeted: 'Absolutely gutted that we've had to fold. An excellent group of lads that was more than capable of competing at senior level!

Matty Gollands said it was 'a shame the club fold. A group of talented young players, shame other teams ruined a chance for them.'
