A north Norfolk stock car driver who was hospitalised is now reportedly 'awake and responding'.

Mathew Newson, from Aylsham, a BriSCA formula one stock car driver was taken ill during an event at the weekend.

He was described as being in a 'critical but stable' condition on Monday.

The British Stock Car Drivers Association (BSCDA) shared an update on his condition on their Facebook page on Tuesday, February 26.

They said: 'We are delighted to report that Mat is now awake and responding to nurses although he is not talking as of yet.

'We will keep everyone updated as we get more information.'

A post shared the previous day, read: 'As reported over the weekend, BSCDA committee member Mathew Newson is currently in hospital and is in a critical but stable condition.

'Mat's parents, Rob (Bugsie) and Anita are overwhelmed by the concern, support and well wishes from everyone.

'Please can we ask people to refrain from contacting the family whilst they go through this stressful and worrying time.'
