A staff consultation over job losses at a Norfolk hospital has been brought forward by two weeks.

Managers at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in King's Lynn, made the decision amid concern from workers that delays were leaving "a black cloud" hanging over their heads.

The consultation period, which is expected to result in the loss of 40 administrative jobs, had been due to begin at the end of this month.

But in a QEH briefing note issued released on Thursday, workers were told the six-week process would now begin on June 16.

It says posts could be saved by job-sharing or other staff reducing the number of hours they work.

But up to 200 workers will still receive "risk letters" on June 19, a standard NHS policy to advise staff their post may be at risk.

The letter says: "Our aim is to look at all possible ways of achieving the reduction of 40 posts by other means where we can.

"This may involve, for example, some staff agreeing to job-share, reducing hours or developing alternative ways of working.

"The contribution of staff towards the consultation process is extremely important.

"We will listen carefully during the consultation process to any other ideas staff have for achieving the reductions.

"Inevitably, though, there will be some redundancies at the end of this process."

Job losses are being targeted in the hospital's administration and clerical departments.

The cash-strapped hospital, which has already cut posts and mothballed beds, is struggling with debts of nearly £11m.

Bosses said those who were sent at risk letters would be ranked, with the lowest selected for redundancy once all other avenues have been reviewed.
