Hole better future for wildlife at Fleggburgh
Deep in the fen at Burgh Common, Fleggburgh, near Acle, a digger is manoeuvring nimbly to dig out a new turf pond to improve the wildlife habitat.
Built and operated by Olympic, a company based at Rackheath, the special machine is adapted to work in sensitive landscape areas and creates less damage than a man's footprint.
The Broads Authority's senior conservationist, Andrea Kelly, said the pond was one of more than 40 being created by the authority as part of the national Million Ponds Project. Temporary ponds within fen habitats guaranteed clean water, were rich in wildlife and recreated reed swamp.
