A historic part of Lowestoft that links the town to the original fishing village has been selected for a major regeneration project.
Back in October, the Lowestoft North Conservation Area was added to Historic England's 'at risk' register 'because of poor quality alterations to individual buildings, which have harmed the character of the historic streetscape.'
However, plans have been in the pipeline to revive the area and John Glen, Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, announced today that North Lowestoft has been named as one of the country's latest Heritage Action Zones (HAZ).
As part of a five-year scheme, run by Waveney District Council (WDC) and Historic England, neglected buildings will be brought back into use as housing or retail spaces and the area will undergo general regeneration and transformation.
A detailed delivery plan for the North Lowestoft Heritage Action Zone will now be prepared for delivery from spring 2018 onwards, and will identify any grant-funding to be provided by Historic England.
Heritage Action Zones first came into being earlier this year with the aim of unleashing the power in England's historic environment to create economic growth and improve quality of life in villages, towns and cities.
Mr Glen said: 'Our heritage not only tells the story of our past; it creates great places to live, work and visit.
'The Heritage Action Zone scheme will make the most out of Lowestoft's historic environment to kick-start regeneration, increase tourism and boost investment.'
With the help of local people and partners, Historic England are hoping to breathe new life into places that are rich in heritage make them more attractive to residents, businesses, tourists and investors.
The North Lowestoft HAZ was once the main medieval settlement grown around the fishing industry and is home to many fine historic buildings, with the oldest dating back to the 15th century.
The WDC-led scheme will see partnerships formed with Lowestoft Town Council, East Suffolk Building Preservation Trust and Lowestoft Vision.
Michael Ladd, Waveney's cabinet member for tourism and economic development and Heritage Champion at the district council, said: 'We're delighted that Lowestoft has been chosen as one of the country's Heritage Action Zones.
'We can't wait to get started on the project and to ensure that the town's character and heritage will truly benefit the area, and current and future generations.'
