Hethersett Library turned the clocks back to 1972 for a special celebration morning to mark its 40th anniversary.

The library first opened its doors to the public on June 3, 1972. Community Librarian Jayne Winterbone outlined some of the international events of those times when Edward Heath was Prime Minister, the miners' strike was taking place and the Vietnam War was ending. David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Monty Python were just a few of the popular icons.

She spoke of what she referred to as 'a huge achievement' for Hethersett with the village library having 43,000 visitors last year and 58,000 books being issued. She underlined the close links the library had with local groups and the local community and also work undertaken by the library service with various vulnerable groups throughout the county.

Barry Stone, Norfolk County Council cabinet member for Cultural Services, cut a special birthday cake and this was served with coffee and biscuits to local people and library staff – both past and present.

Hethersett Library holds a wealth of events throughout the year to cover all ages from toddlers to pensioners, including arts and craft events, talks, computer sessions, book groups, school holiday and themed events.
