The retiring chief executive of the health watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) was full of praise during a visit to the West Suffolk Hospital.
Sir David Behan said the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s (WSFT) journey to be rated outstanding had been “hard won and many years in the making”.
During his visit to the Bury St Edmunds hospital and had a brief tour from chief executive Dr Stephen Dunn and also gave a talk to trust staff.
Mr Behan said: “It’s been a pleasure to visit the trust today and to meet some of its fantastic people.
“What stands out at the West Suffolk is the culture – one that is of openness and learning, and where leaders support their people. The outstanding rating is a reflection of that.”
The hospital was awarded the highest possible CQC rating of outstanding in January - one of just seven general hospitals in England to have such a rating.
