The union representing ambulance crews in our region has called on chiefs to buy new jackets for staff for the winter months.

Unison launched a petition on Wednesday asking the East of England Ambulance Trust (EEAST) to pay out for “superior jackets” after staff told them the current ones were not fit for purpose.

The petition has gained more than 1,300 signatures in less than 48 hours and Unison branch secretary Fraer Stevenson said: “Frontline staff raised with Unison the need for better protection from the elements and they asked for the same superior jackets that the West Midlands Ambulance Service issues.

“Unison started a petition to encourage the East of England Ambulance Trust to take on board this issue, after a number of meetings with the trust did not move this forwards.

“It’s really heartening that over 1000 people signed this petition in the first 24 hours - this means a lot to our frontline staff.

“Our staff do an amazing job, but it’s really hard going at the moment and having fit for purpose uniform would really help them.”

She said the trust already issued the jackets some specially-trained managers.

She added: “I hope the trust will listen to the support staff have from the public and choose to invest in staff wellbeing by agreeing to provide these jackets.”

An EEAST spokesman said: “All Ambulance Trusts are committed to the procurement of a single national uniform specification through a national framework which is focussed on achieving best value for money.

“Some weeks ago, EEAST informed UNISON that it would be pleased to support a proposal, to put forward the idea of replacing existing jackets with Munro jackets, to the national ambulance procurement group for their consideration. If all Ambulance Trusts agree to adopt this change to the national uniform specification, then EEAST will be in a position to adopt these jackets as part of our uniform replacement process and continue to comply with national requirements for consistency.”
