A further 159 people with coronavirus, including a patient at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, have died.

NHS England made the announcement on Monday afternoon that the total of deaths in England has risen to 1,284.

Later Department for Health figures showed, across the UK, 180 people had died after testing positive - pushing the total to 1,415.

Of the new deaths, one patient being treated at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital died on March 28, according to NHS England.

An NHS spokesman: “Patients were aged between 32 and 98 years old and all but four patients, aged between 56 and 87 years old, had underlying health conditions.”

In Norfolk, 11 people who have tested positive for coronavirus have died, including six at the Norfolk and Norwich, four at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and one at the James Paget University Hospital.

The Norfolk and Norwich has since confirmed the ages of two patients who died at the weekend. In a statement the hospital said: “Sadly we can confirm that two patients who were being cared for at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and had tested positive for COVID-19, have died.

“The patients who died were a woman in her 90s and a man in his 80s. Both had underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”

Figures from Public Health England showed 130 people in the county have now tested positive for coronavirus.

That was up 26 on yesterday. The number of positive cases in Suffolk hit 100, up 13 on the day before.

Nationally, there were 2,619 new cases, bring the total confirmed cases to 22,141.

There have been 7,209 new tests, taking the tally of people tested to 134,946.

The jump in coronavirus-related deaths in the UK from 1,228 to 1,408 was below the day-on-day increases seen during the past few days. The number rose 209 on March 29, 260 on March 28 and 181 on March 27.

The day-on-day increases in the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK have also been slowing down.

But there has been almost a 50pc rise in just a few days in the number of people being treated for coronavirus in England’s hospitals, according to new figures.

Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, said on Friday that more than 6,200 patients were in hospital with Covid-19.

But on Monday, he said this figure had jumped to more than 9,000.

However, at Monday’s Downing Street press conference, the government’s chief scientific advisor Sir Patrick Vallance said the number of people admitted to hospital with coronavirus was going up “in a constant amount”.

Sir Patrick said: “The measures are in place, they are making a difference, they are decreasing the contact which is so important to spread the disease and we’re doing a good job at cutting that down.”
