A new group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide will start in Norwich and central Norfolk.

Mental health charity Mind will launch the group thanks to the money raised by generous members of the public who have been skydiving, taking part in cycle rides, and organising coffee mornings to raise money for the charity.

It is one of the many new projects announced by the charity, using funds donated over the past year.

Other initiatives include support for LGBTQ people through wellbeing and mental health workshops and a low-cost complementary therapy service for people with mental distress who are on a low income.

Extra funds will also go towards better training support line staff, so they can work with people with people with a personality disorder or complex trauma.

And a new mindfulness service will offer free mindfulness-based cognitive therapy sessions for those with moderate mental health issues.

The new suicide bereavement group will not be the first in the area.

Last year Kathryn Sault and Joy Cresswell set up Empathy.

The pair had both lost loved ones to suicide and after finding a lack of support when they needed it, decided to help others.

Mrs Cresswell had found help in the Norfolk and Norwich Suicide Bereavement Support Group, where she later became a volunteer. But both said doctors had offered them antidepressants as a first option, and at no stage was there real support for those bereaved through suicide.

Sarah Ingram, fundraising manager at Mind, said: 'People have been incredibly generous in supporting our charity and not only does the money go a long way to help people in our community, fundraising also raises awareness of the support available and opens up conversations about mental health.'

Amanda Hedley, Norwich and Central Norfolk Mind chief executive, said 'On behalf of the organisation I would like to thank everyone who has spent time and energy fundraising for us. All the money raised is used to improve what we can offer to the people who live in Norwich and central Norfolk.'
