An exhibition, which created widespread interest, has been moved to a new venue as it is extended until the end of November.

The ‘Lowestoft Hospital: Past, Present and Future’ exhibition was successfully held in Lowestoft Library, and has now moved to the Lowestoft Heritage Workshop Centre in Wildes Score.

Featuring a wide range of documents and photographs, the exhibition trace its roots from a purely voluntary hospital, through its expansion under the NHS as well as the present campaign to keep and develop the site. Lowestoft Heritage Workshop Centre is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 4pm.

Local historian Chris Brooks, who is also the chairman of Suffolk Pensioners, has been active in the campaign to reopen the hospital and he put this exhibition together. He said: “The hospital was built and run solely by the people of Lowestoft and they contributed large sums for equipment and refurbishment even after the creation of the NHS in 1948.

The campaign proposed reinstating the wards and siting the long promised medical centre there to serve north Lowestoft.

Frank Joyce, secretary of Lowestoft Coalition against the Cuts, said: “The NHS authorities have never confronted the arguments put forward in the campaign. Now, after the sale the pressure to intensively develop the site for housing is immense, and not only from the developer.”
