The King's Lynn Queen Elizabeth Hospital's car park is often known to be congested with both staff and visitors, with many visitors reportedly parking inappropriately and causing obstructions on roads nearby in a bid to find space.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has now submitted a planning application to create 117 new spaces across three different sites, which it says 'will enable the trust to manage parking in a safer and more accessible manner'.

A design and access statement submitted by the trust as part of the planning application to West Norfolk council added: 'The proposal will enable the Trust to limit inappropriate parking that currently obstructs pavements and roadways.'

The new parking spaces would be split across three sites.

The first, an unused plot of scrubland to the north-west of the hospital on land between the ambulance centre and breast care unit, would provide 50 new car parking spaces, including three disabled bays and two bays equipped for electric car charging.

The car park would merge with the existing run of parking bays along the access road adjacent to the breast care unit.

A strip of unused land with silver birch and oak trees would provide 25 additional car parking bays, to merge along the south of existing car park O.

An area of turfed land with a cluster of trees and bushes to the east of the hospital would provide the final 42 spaces, including four bays equipped for electric car charging.

Toby Wing-Pentelow, district councillor for the Springwood ward - which covers the QEH - said: 'Parking has always been a problem there. My mother was in hospital for some time and parking was difficult.

'There area lack of spaces. They do definitely need more but they are so short of space to expand.'
