A private dental practice can expect another visit by inspectors after it was found to be unsafe and in breach of regulations by the Care Quality Commission.

Two areas of concern were identified at Dundee Court dental centre on the North Lynn industrial estate, in a report published by the independent health regulator.

Dental reports describe whether services provided are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, in accordance with the regulations. There is no overall rating, but under safe and well-led the practice was rated as 'improvements required', with no action required elsewhere.

The inspection was carried out in September, and the report states that 'the provider did not have robust systems in place to ensure safety within the service. Risk assessment was poor and control measures to reduce risk were not always implemented, Infection control procedures did not meet national guidance and recruitment procedures were not robust.'

The report also found it did not have 'effective systems in place to assess and monitor the quality of clinical care. 'This included the auditing of its service, the appraisal of staff, providing robust leadership in the practice and acting upon suggestions of patients'.

The report said the practice did not have access to a defibrillator and the medical oxygen available was out of date. Essential checks for gas safety and legionella control had also not been implemented.

However, the practice did have sufficient numbers of suitably qualified and competent staff, who treated patients in a way they liked.

Professor Steve Field, chief inspector of general practice (primary medical services and integrated care directorate), said: 'If we find that a dental practice is failing to meet the required standard - we will expect them to provide us with a full plan setting out how they will address the issue, and we will return to check they have made the required improvements.'

Dundee Court provides private dentistry services to adults and children, and serves about 2,200 patients.

Dr Christopher Bird, who owns the practice, did not wish to comment.
