Now's the time to put those New Year's resolutions into practice with a weekend of free events based on the theme of wellness.

West Norfolk leisure facilities will be offering a wide range of sessions on everything from quitting smoking to healthy eating.

There will also be the opportunity to have a go at a variety of activities from Body Combat to Tai Chi and Zumba – a Latin-based aerobic dance workout.

This weekend will see wellness activites at all four of the borough council's facilities at Lynnsport, the Oasis at Hunstanton, St James and Downham Market – and they will all be free of charge.

Elizabeth Nockolds, cabinet member for sports, arts and open spaces, said: 'Many people want to take up exercise or become more healthy but aren't sure where to start or feel nervous about coming to a leisure centre because they are worried that it's full of fitness fanatics.

'The Wellness Weekend is designed to take away those fears.

'Fitness can be fun and our leisure centres have a range of activities available, so whether it's something gentle for the over 50s, something dance-based that you can do with your friends, or something more energetic, there really is something for everyone.

'And for people who are already fit and active, this weekend offers a great opportunity to give something new a try.'

As part of the weekend, the NHS King's Lynn Health Trainer service will also present a series of short seminars on subjects including healthy eating, drinking less alcohol and smoking cessation.

'Our friendly staff will be on hand all weekend to provide information and advice, to introduce people to some of the classes and to encourage them to try a taster session. We also have qualified staff available to provide personal health consultations,' said Simon McKenna, senior leisure manager.

The borough's leisure centres are already used by a wide range of the community, with people aged from under a year to 100, and the weekend is designed to ensure that there is something available for everyone to have a go at, he added.

This year is the first time the borough has run a Wellness Weekend and it is hoped that the event will encourage people to stick to their new year plans to stay fitter and healthier.

Further information on all the events is available via the council's website at www.west-norfolk.gov.uk or directly from the leisure centres.
