Staff at Cromer library will be urging older people and their carers to stay 'warm and well' this winter, at an event featuring singing, soup and seated exercise.

Aimed at combating loneliness and isolation among the over 60s, the afternoon session has been organised by Cromer library manager Sheila Breslin and her team.

'We wanted to do something that was geared towards older, more vulnerable members of the community and the whole idea is to get people socialising and meeting people,' Mrs Breslin said.

The event is the latest in a series of activity sessions hosted by Cromer library as part of Norfolk Library and Information Service's Healthy Libraries initiative, which won a £4,000 Libraries Change Lives award for its work promoting wellbeing across the county's 47 libraries.

The project has seen libraries run sessions ranging from hula hoop challenges and healthy eating-themed lunches, to slipper swaps, art classes and a pedal-powered smoothie bike.

At Cromer, staff have laid on activities including art exhibitions and workshops and seated exercise classes, with some sessions becoming permanent fixtures in the library calendar.

'Some of the events we have run really have been incredibly popular, which is quite a result for the library,' Mrs Breslin said. 'And what is so nice is that a lot of the people coming along have gone on to become friends.'

The Warm and Well event will include a drop-in singing workshop with Harmony Choir and Norfolk-themed storytelling, as well as stands run by elderly people's charities and brief talks from representatives from Community Action Norfolk and organisations supporting people with dementia and hearing problems.

Those attending will also have a chance to join in with a seated exercise taster session run by North Norfolk District Council senior sports activator Wyn Nurse, before tucking in to soup and a roll laid on by the Old Rock Shop Bistro, Cromer.

Mrs Breslin said: 'We want people in the community to know that they are welcome at the library and that we are not just here for borrowing books.'
