A community first responder (CFR) group in Norfolk has reached a landmark by attending its 5,000th call out.

Volunteers from Wroxham and Hoveton CFRs have been attending medical emergencies for more than 11 years.

A recent call to help a patient with breathing difficulties represented the group’s 5,000th call.

Coordinator Kevin Webster, who has attended more than 3,000 of those calls, said the group has seven CFRs. However, they were always keen to hear from new volunteers.

He said: “There are many highlights from helping an elderly patient who has had a fall to successfully resuscitating a patient who is in cardiac arrest. Someone had a cardiac arrest in my home once and we managed to get him back. Every call has its challenge, but that is what makes the role so satisfactory and enjoyable.

“We are very grateful for all the donations we receive, local groups such as the Lions club, Masons and amateur dramatics group have been very supportive.”

The group also helps patients in Wroxham, Hoveton, Salhouse, Rackheath, Horning, Ludham, Coltishall and Horstead.

Community first responders are trained by the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) to attend medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests, patients with breathing difficulties and chest pain, chokings, and diabetic emergencies.
