Pool closes after fears change in water temperature could lead to Legionnaires’ disease

Bungay Pool and Gym announced they would be closed for seven to 10 days after the change in temperature could make the leisure centre unsafe.

The sports centre told customers they were installing new heating units and they would temporarily close the centre for up to 10 days.

In a post on Facebook, a spokesperson for the pool said: “During this time the centre will be without any running water. However the units, which are being installed over the next week, will provide a resolution to this issue as well as the recent shower temperature fluctuations.

“It has therefore been decided to close the centre until this work is complete and we would like to apologise for the inconvenience this causes.”

Katherine Wilson, from Rumburgh said swimming at Bungay is “generally an unpleasant experience.”

She said: “I suppose I accept that work needs to be done, perhaps they can’t help the heat pump problem, although it has been going on a long time now.

“As far as I know, no further apologies have been given and no offer of any refunds.”

Bungay swimming pool was closed at the end of last year as engineers worked to repair the boilers in the pool.

At the time, engineers fixed the boilers and addressed a separate issue relating to the water cylinders.

A spokesperson for Waveney District Council said: “Legionella occurs naturally, at low levels, in the water supply and temperature control ordinarily prevents it from posing any risk.

“However, because of the current fluctuations in water temperature, this process cannot be guaranteed.

“Therefore, even if there is only the smallest chance that the levels of bacteria could rise, it is entirely appropriate to take action which puts public health first.”

The spokesperson for Bungay Pool and Gym said: “Although we appreciate your frustrations we continue to work closely with our landlord East Suffolk Council to find a solution with the current forced closure.”
