Two elderly people died when their car crashed head-on into vehicle carrying three people, near Fakenham.

It happened just before 3.40pm on Saturday on the A1065 Hempton road, near its junction with the A148 Fakenham-King's Lynn road.

A Norfolk police spokesman said the couple's grey Proton Persona was travelling towards the A148 from the Hempton direction when, for reasons unknown, it drifted across into the opposite carriageway and was involved in a head-on collision with a silver Mitsubishi Colt.

The driver of the Proton, a 70-year-old man from the Hertfordshire area and his passenger, a 60-year-old woman, also from the Hertfordshire area, died as a result of their injuries. The man woman had been air-lifted by the East Anglian Air Ambulance to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

The three people in the Mitsubishi Colt all suffered minor chest injuries. The driver, a 72-year-old man and one female passenger were from the Kent area. The second passenger, also a female, came from Feltwell, near Thetford.

Police are particularly keen to speak to the driver and passenger of a Black Renault Clio that stopped at the scene but left before police arrived.
