One such Speed Awareness Message (SAM) has vanished from its home beside the A1075 in Wretham, near Thetford.

The £3,205 piece of tech, which automatically flashes when a driver passes and alerts them to their speed, was placed on the Watton-bound side of the road close to the junction with Peddars Way on September 4 by parish clerk Julian Gibson. When he and wife Joy next went to check on the machine on October 15 it had been stolen, with a padlock removed to detach the sign from its bracket.

Mr Gibson has reported the theft to the police and asks anyone with information to either phone him on 01953 499980 or the police on 101.

SAMs are a popular purchase for parish and town councils and community speedwatch teams to improve road safety.

They are available through Norfolk County Council's Parish Partnership Scheme.
