Tributes have been paid to a lorry driver from Lowestoft who lost his life when his HGV overturned in high winds in Scotland.

Robert Dellow, 54, was killed on Thursday morning when his HGV overturned and was then involved in a collision with other vehicles in West Lothian, near Edinburgh.

Mr Dellow worked for Neil Bomford Haulage which is based in Harleston, near Diss.

Ron Cornell, general manager at Neil Bomford Haulage, said: 'Robert was an exemplary employee going about his business in a quiet and unassuming manner.

'I am unable to remember speaking to him concerning any negative issues.

'It is less known that Robert represented England, keeping goal, for the national football schoolboy team in the early 70's.

'The directors, management and all staff and drivers send their condolences to his family and friends.'

Mr Dellow was just a mile from his destination in Bathgate, West Lothian, when his HGV was blown onto two cars on the A801.

Four other motorists were taken to hospital.

Wind speeds had reached 80mph as they battered the region for several hours.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: 'Emergency services responded to the incident, however, the 54-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. 'Four other motorists suffered minor injuries and were taken to St John's Hospital for treatment.

'The road was closed for around eight hours while road policing officers carried out an investigation.'
