Motorists were caught in traffic gridlock for about two hours today when Breydon Bridge at Yarmouth got stuck in an upright position.

The Yarmouth Port Authority blamed a mechanical failure with the bridge and an engineer had to use an override system to manually lower it.

The problems occurred at about at 2.20pm after the bridge was raised to allow a boat to pass underneath.

The engineer managed to lower the bridge by 3.25pm, but backlogged traffic took another hour to clear.
