A World War One grenade, thought to be decommissioned, has been detonated in a controlled explosion this afternoon after its owner discovered it was live.
Police in Wisbech were called to Barton Road in Wisbech today (March 27) after a man believed he had bought a live hand grenade.
Explosive Ordinance Disposal attended the scene and confirmed the hand grenade to be live.
Fen cops tweeted: 'The Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal team have carried out a controlled explosion in Wisbech this afternoon on a live WWI grenade. #safetyfirst'
A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: 'We received a report from a member of the public in Barton Road, Wisbech, who believed he may have bought a live hand grenade.
'He bought it thinking it was decommissioned. EOD attended the scene and confirmed it was live. They detonated the grenade this afternoon in a controlled explosion.
'We are satisfied that it was both sold and bought assuming it was decommissioned. The shop has been informed that this was not the case for consideration in the future.'
