A gardening club in the Fens has raised 1,920 for a charity which helps servicemen and women who have been wounded in Britain's recent conflicts.

The Greenfingers Gardening Club raised some of the money for Help for Heroes by hosting an open day at one its member's gardens, where members of the public paid to have a look around.

The rest of the money came from a plant stall the club run at the Upwell Fete as well as two quiz nights, raffles and plant sales from club meetings.

Gail Jetson, club secretary, said: 'We are proud of raising this sum of money, especially bearing in mind the relatively small size of the club.'

The gardening club was started in 1992 by three ladies living in Outwell but today membership stands at 65 with people from King's Lynn, Wisbech, Downham Market and most of the surrounding villages. Mrs Jetson said: 'As a club, we are keen to support charities, which have included, the RSPCA, Talking Newspapers, Greenfingers and the East Anglian Air Ambulance.'

She added: 'Our members are of all ages and are a mixture of complete novices to the very knowledgeable, with the size of their gardens ranging from the pocket handkerchief to the very big.

'The only qualification to become a member is a love of gardening.'

Help for Heroes was founded by Bryn Parry and his wife Emma after they visited soldiers at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham. It was launched in October 2007.

The charity has attracted a number of high profile trustees and patrons over the years, including Jeremy Clarkson and Ross Kemp.
