Greater Anglia introduces new braking system to rural services

An innovative braking system, which is hoped will improve reliability, is being fitted to Greater Anglia’s trains which operate on rural services in Norfolk and Suffolk.
The wheel slide protection system which works much in the same way as ABS systems in cars is currently being fitted to the train operator’s class 153 trains after a trial of the system on 156 class trains last autumn lead to improved service punctuality and reliability.
The new braking system is designed to cope with problems such as ‘leaves on the line’ and slippery rails more efficiently than current braking systems.
Greater Anglia’s Norwich Depot Technical Support Manager, Jason Mills, said, “It’s great that these innovative brakes are being rolled out to our Class 153 trains as it means the entire rural fleet will be more reliable this Autumn, improving performance and our passengers’ experience while we await the roll out of new trains from 2019.”
